Google will disable Search and Gemini by default for school student accounts

School administrators will need to explicitly enable four services, with transition details to follow

Google announced new access rules for K–12 student accounts on November 3. Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be entirely off until school administrators explicitly enable them. Google says it will share transition details with schools over the coming months before the changes roll out.

Google is also expanding Guided Learning, a study mode built around open-ended questions and step-by-step explanations. It became globally available in Google Classroom on November 3. Students launch an activity assigned by their teacher, with the tool drawing on class materials. Teachers receive real-time insights to help identify where their class needs additional support.

A Guided Learning pilot in Search will begin at selected US schools later in November. For certain homework queries, Search will guide students through a topic or problem, such as a complex physics exercise or preparing a book report. Google plans to incorporate educator feedback before expanding the pilot to more school districts in the following months.
