Sony and Lionsgate are teaming up on director Destin Daniel Cretton’s live-action Naruto film. Lionsgate has given the project the green light, with shooting targeted for spring 2027. Lionsgate will oversee production and domestic distribution, while Sony Pictures handles the international release.
Cretton said he has long admired the heart, humour and humanity beneath Naruto’s spectacular action. He described Masashi Kishimoto’s creation as a world in which unlikely heroes do extraordinary things. The director wants to preserve what fans love about the story while introducing it to a new generation, and said he was excited to reunite with Sony’s team.
Lionsgate and Cretton launched a worldwide casting search over the summer for the three young members of Team 7: Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Casting for other characters was to follow. Kishimoto welcomed Cretton’s involvement at the time and said he looked forward to meeting the performers who would bring his characters to the screen. No cast members have yet been confirmed for the film.
