Edgar Wright says the original Spaced team was not involved in preparing the show’s new Blu-ray edition. The director learned about the remaster from a viewer. Writing on November 1, he said nobody involved in making the series had approved this release, and that he was finding out how it had come about.
Wright said he had spent years pushing for a Spaced Blu-ray release. Discovering that the new edition had been prepared without their involvement left him disappointed. In a separate reply, he pointed to Channel 4 and said the team had been closely involved with previous editions.
The new collection’s description advertises a 4K master made with a combination of traditional and proprietary tools. Its stated process includes algorithmic corrections and additional frame-by-frame enhancements performed by a human operator.
Spaced originally ran from 1999 to 2001 and was shot on standard-definition DigiBeta cameras. Wright directed both seasons of the British comedy, whose principal cast includes Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
