ARC Raiders Embark explains its use of AI voices

The team discusses dialogue for the ping system and piano samples recorded in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

ARC Raiders executive producer Aleksander Grøndal says some criticism of the game's AI voices was fair. In a new episode of the development documentary, he and other Embark staff discuss how the studio creates character voices and the game's soundscape.

Audio director Bence Pajor says recordings of the actors' voices provided training material and helped the team prototype dialogue. Every new item or feature needs lines for the ping system, while mechanics can change late in development. Recording every possible variation and bringing the actors back after each change became impractical, he explains.

Chief creative officer Stefan Strandberg hopes to give the actors' performances more room. Over the coming years, he wants to explore the personalities and motivations of ARC Raiders' characters in greater depth.

In the same episode, Pajor explains the source of the game's playable piano. The studio bought a sample library of an old instrument that someone else had discovered and recorded in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
