Microsoft has released a preview of new DirectX Raytracing features. In a Radeon RX 9070 test published on October 28, switching to Clustered Geometry reduced ray-tracing acceleration-structure memory from 7,519 to 774 MiB, a reduction of 89.7%. The measurement used a dedicated D3D12 test scene with procedural objects and an animated sphere.
Clustered Geometry divides geometry into reusable clusters containing up to 256 triangles each, allowing individual parts of complex objects to be updated. Partitioned TLAS preserves the built data for unchanged parts of a scene and focuses rebuilding work on regions that have changed.
Developers need Agility SDK 1.722 Preview, a supporting driver and Windows Developer Mode. Current support covers all GeForce RTX GPUs, Radeon RX 9000, Intel Arc B and Core Ultra 200V and Series 3 graphics. Qualcomm is targeting the first or second quarter of 2027 for Snapdragon X2 drivers.
